Skogs Elmia - Mobile technology excites

As well as the countless displays including:

  • manufacturers of new forestry machinery

  • lovers of old machinery

  • live drone demonstrations

  • training organisations and forestry schools

  • forest owners organisations, and

  • even service providers who certify contractors

I found three very exciting exhibitors who are using mobile phones to ensure the process of growing trees and selling wood is made more transparent and trusted for all parties in the supply chain.

How much wood have you got?

  • KATAM Technologies AB - (SkogsElmia 2019 Gold Innovation Award winner) Their mobile phone app allows owners to cruise their forest and get an accurate measuring of the standing volume. The technology uses the images captured by a mobile device and smart data matching technology to match images with a library of data. The correlation of ground measurements with the captured images enables forest owners to assess the species, diameter, height and volume of all the trees on their property.

How much has been harvested?

  • Timbeter OU - Contractors, forest owners and log buyers can use their mobile phone to quickly and accurately use mobile phones to assess log volumes. The app uses a combination of image recognition and machine learning technology coupled with cloud storage to provide a low cost solution for knowing how much wood is harvested from a forest. Millions of cubic metres are being measured like this.

Where is it the wood going?

  • Tracy of Sweden AB - (SkogsElmia 2019 Gold Innovation Award winner) This app uses image recognition technology to develop a “fingerprint” of the cut-end of individual logs that can be used to provide traceability of logs from the forest through the supply chain. Split-second image recognition technology in sawmills can assure mill owners that the wood they are using comes from legitimate sources.
